ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Charles Dickens (1812–1871) was an English author. He is respected by numerous as the most note-worthy writer of the Victorian period. He composed numerous novels; one of his, "The Pickwick Papers," was distributed in 1836.

INTRODUCTION TO THE STORY:

Oliver Twist and his friend were ill-treated, maltreated, not well fed, and famished in a workhouse. One day, a tall boy declared that he would eat the child who slept near him unless more gruel was put into his bowl. Consequently, a meeting was held to determine whether Oliver would appeal to the master for an increase in the amount of food.

Oliver Twist was then taken on as an apprentice, where he worked with an undertaker. The novel ‘Oliver Twist’ depicts the ruthless acts done by many orphans living in London during the mid-19th century Industrial Age England.

1. Describe the workhorse.

"Among other buildings in a town in England, there was a house for poor people who had no money and no place to live. This was called the workhorse."


2. What was Oliver's mother's last wish? How was it fulfilled?

Oliver's mother's last wish was to see the child and then pass away. She said, "Let me see the child and die." After Oliver was born, she held him in her arm, "pressed her cold white lips to its face," and then passed away.Her wish was fulfilled when "the doctor put the child in her arm" when she was alive. 


3. What evidence is given within the story to say that the youthful lady was destitute and not married?

The evidence given within the story demonstrates that the young lady was destitute. "She was lying in the street. She had walked a long way, and her shoes had holes in them. No one knows where she came from or where she was going.".The other proof given within the story is that she was not married: "The doctor raised the dead woman's left hand. The usual story he told was,I see that she has no rings on her finger. She wasn't married".


4. What did the old lady do after the doctor went home? What does this say about the life of a workhorse?

"The old woman sat down on a chair in front of the fire and began to dress the baby. She dressed him in the very old clothes used for babies, who were in the workhorse. The child was an orphan, born into a world that had no love or pity for him".


5. How did Oliver Bend get his name?

"We named the new babies here in order from A to Z, he explained when people asked. 'I named the last one Swuble. This one is a twist. The next one will be Unwin".


6. Compare the appearance of Oliver with that of the master.


Oliver was described as "a pale" and "thin child, at the age of nine." On the other hand, the master of the workhorse was a "fat and healthy" man. 



7. What was the eating habit of the boys in the workhorse?


The boy "was fed in a big hall. A large pot stood at one end of the room, and the soup was served by the master. Each boy had one small bowl of soup and no more. The bowls never needed washing because the boys cleaned them with their spoons until they shone".


8. How did Master and Mr. Bumble respond when Oliver asked for more food?


The master was "surprised" and "pale" when Oliver asked for more food. He responded by hitting Oliver "with his spoon, then seized him and cried for help. Mr.Bumble rushed into the room" and was astonished by Oliver's request, saying, "I cannot believe it. One day, they will hang the boy! He took Oliver away and shut him in a dark room," leading to his punishment and isolation for a week.


9. Why did Oliver ask for more food?


Oliver asked for more food because he wanted to have a sufficient meal. Within the workhorse, he and other boys were served "a little bowl of soup and no more" and "a small piece of bread" each "Sunday".


10. Why did Mr.Bumble beat Oliver in front of everyone?


"Mr.Bumble beat him in front of everyone" because Oliver dared to ask for more food. Mr.Bumble wanted to use Oliver as an example to panic and discourage the other children from making similar requests. By showing that Oliver's activity was not tolerated and had serious consequences, Mr.Bumble aimed to maintain authority and prevent any other kids from challenging the rule or asking for more food.


11. Who was Mr.Sowerbery? describe his appearance.


"Mr.Sowerberry was a tall, thin man who wore dark clothes" and was involved in the undertaking business. He made "coffins," and "many of his coffins" were meant for the poor individual who died in the workhorse.He is described as having a somber and serious appearance, typically dressed in black attire. His occupation as a coffin maker suggests his connection to the somber aspects of life and death.


12. What was written in the notice? Where was it put up, and by whom?


The notice that was put up "on the workhorse gate" offered "five pounds to anyone who would take an olive twist." It was put up on the workhorse gate by Mr.Bumble.


13. Why did Mr.Sowerberry come to the workhorse, and what did Mr.Bumble say to him?


Mr. Sowerberry came to the workhorse because he had "prepared the coffin for the two women who died last night" in the workhorse. 

"Good, said Mr.Bumble. 'You will be rich one day, Mr.Sowerberry! Do you know anybody who wants a boy? And five pounds? He raised his stick and pointed to the notice on the gate.".
